 | It's Good To See You | Oct 1, 2006 |
Welcome to my little nook. Feel free to browse and see what's going on in my life. I try to update this page as often as I have the time to spare. So keep on coming back for new stuff. | | So far, these are the awards that Kevin, Anna and Yna have collectively received for academic achievement. Robin and I have decided to make a scrapbook with all the commendations thay have received through the years. This has been an extremely rewarding year for the three of them. Anna got perfect scores in all her core subjects in the state-wide Texas Asessment of Knowledge and Skills. Kevin missed one question in Math but perfected the other subject areas. We also received news yesterday that Kevin made it to the Honors Marching Band of the high school he is attending in the fall. They had an audition last Wednesday. He has also been exempted from taking all his final exams this week. Little Yna also has been following in her elder siblings footsteps. I will post her teacher's comments about her soon. Robin and I are very happy and proud of all of them. |
| | We had to be up early today to make it to Petey's doctor appointment, He was up for his booster shots and his monthly check-up. He has gained some weight...he is now 3 lbs 6 ounces. Yna, Robin and I took him to the vet's office. Kevin slept over at Chris' and Anna slept over at Haley's. We came home to Kevin waiting for us in the front porch. As of this time, Anna hasn't called yet. I'm betting she and Haley are still asleep. I know what sleepovers are all about.....they actually stay up all night!!! |
| | The three day weekend has given us ample time to just hang out together and enjoy. It doesn't really matter what we do or where we go as long as we're together....Robin, Emily, Kevin, Anna and Yna. We attended the Life Teen mass at 5pm and had planned to drop for some cheesecake before proceeding home. Robin had prepared Igado and we were looking forward to having it for dinner. But then, we decided to have dinner at the Cheescake Factory, which does have a lot more on the menu other than cheesecake. |
| | Kevin's last band concert in Middle School....we watched the Baines Middle School Honors Band perform last Thursday, May 22nd. More than half of the Honors Band is composed of 8th graders who will be going to high school in the fall. At the end of the concert, awards were given out to the outgoing members. Kevin got his share of awards including the most improved musician plaque. His band director, Mr Keith Fickel has always been very supportive of him and has guided him to achieve as a saxophone player. Next school year, he will be joining the Marching Band of his high school. |
| | We had a party in class tonight to celebrate the end of our two months of training in Special Education. It's funny how a group of people from different backgrounds and cultures can bond and become real good friends in such a short time. But our class is a testimony to that truth. We have become one extended family, looking out for each other, helping each other out especially during our mini-teach lessons where each one of us had to teach a lesson with our classmates as the students. We will be teaching in different school districts and this might be the last meeting we may have as a group. |
I have worked very hard in the last two months. Eight hours was spent in my regular job and an additional three hours was devoted to learning everything about Special Education. That was a schedule from 7:30am-10:pm. It was not only taxing physically but also mentally. I had to be prepared for my teaching everyday and then I had to go be a student until late in the evening, not to mention the long drive that I had to make to and from the venue of my classes. I took the examination for Early Childhood -12th Grade Special Education certification last April 19th. Since I took the paper based test, there was a three week waiting period before the results were available. My test reporting date was May 9th, 5pm Central Time. That three weeks was one of the longest I have ever waited on. I couldn't wait to know if I made it or not. I kept checking on the SBEC (State Board for Educator Certification) website to see if by chance they had posted the results earlier then announced. True enough, at 6am, May 9th, I logged on and saw my results were in. I passed the test! All my hard work had paid off. I couldn't be happier. In our class of 9, only three of us passed but I am hoping that our other classmates make it on their second attempt. We will have our class party tomorrow night which is our last meeting. Yesterday, I received my official test results, I did well on every competency tested and guess what.....I only had 1 incorrect answer in the Math portion, which to me is a surprise considering that Math and I were never fond of each other! | | Yesterday was Kevin's graduation from Middle School, so to speak. In the fall, he will be in 9th grade and officially be in High School. He has taken Advanced Placement classes in Math and English. (that means that while still in middle school, he was already taking high school Math and English subjects) They had their awards ceremonies yesterday and once again, I was a proud mother. Kevin got most of the awards for the day including the Presidential Award which is given to students who have maintained an A average in their entire three years in Middle School and who have received all commended ratings in the state-wide Texas Assesment of Knowledge and Skills Tests. He also received the All-A Award for having all A's in his report card and the Gifted and Talented Outstanding Achievement Award in US History. Three weeks from now, Anna and Yna will have their own awards ceremonies and I am very certain that on that day, I will again watch my children walk across the school stage to receive their share of academic awards. |
| | so far, so good. robin and the kids are giving me a day-off and they've been doing the chores i usually do on regular days. why can't everyday be mother's day? that's asking too much, i know. so for now, i'm enjoying my day. |
mother's day....come to think of it, what's it all about? it's all about mama, nanay, mom, inay, nanang or whatever other word we use to refer to our mothers. mothers are definitely special people. they are the one person in the world who knows us inside out and who love us for what we are. they are the only persons who know exactly all the faults and flaws we have but who still treat us with so much love and acceptance and who make us feel that there is one person who will always be on our side. my own mom was a very strict woman...so much so that there was a point in my life where i was afraid of her. i didn't quite understand why she was that strict but as i grew older, i realized that she was right all along. when i had my first child and became a mother myself, my mom became my best friend. i could talk to her like she was my friend. i could relate to the way she brought us all up. imagine, she had 9 of us to rear! that was a tall order but she did a very good job. when she passed away, i felt like a part of me died with her. i not only lost my mom, i lost a friend too. in the months before she passed away, we would talk on the phone 2 or 3 times daily. i guess she was lonely as all of us had left the family home and it was just she and my dad in the house. tomorrow is mother's day. my own three children have been hinting they all have something special for me. kevin has volunteered to wash my car as his mother's day present to me. that's something i'd appreciate since my car is crying out for a wash. anna and yna have some "surprises" up their sleeve. my children are sweet and show me how much they care. they are very affectionate towards me...always ready to give me a hug or a kiss. even kevin, who is now 14, often comes up to me with a hug...something he does a lot to robin too. anna and yna are just two cuddy-cuddly girls who love to invade our bed and just hang out with us. motherhood is one complicated, heartwrenching, but heartwarming experience. i wouldn't trade it for anything. | | my birthday/mother's day present....a pink sony vaio with a red liz claiborne tote to carry it in. |
today is national teacher day. since yesterday, i've been receiving presents, cards, flowers from my students. first because it was my birthday and also because of teacher appreciation day. today, i got another handful of presents. it's a very good feeling to know that the parents of my students appreciate and recognize what i do for their children. | | petey's latest pictures. he sure is keeping us all busy. last sunday while we were attending mass, yna kept nudging me and saying, "mom, i miss petey. how many more minutes before the mass ends?" this little fellow surely has brought more joy to our happy home. |
| | we adopted a new member to the family this morning. it was pet adoption day at sienna. the houston humane society brought a number of dogs and cats from their animal shelter for adoption by sienna plantation residents. after his gym workout, robin took anna, yna and i to where the adoptions were taking place. he immediately fell in love with this tiny chihuahua who was rescued off the streets. he is just 5 months old and is still a little malnourished.we filled out the adoption papers, paid the adoption fee and took him home with us. the kids all adore him and he is so happy moving all over the house. puddles and ginger have been eyeing him suspiciously but we are teaching them that this little bug is not an enemy. we intend to nurse him to good health and make him the youngest member of our family. the humane society named him petey but we will give him a new name.....any suggestions? |
| | it's funny how a pair of shoes can entirely change how you walk or carry yourself, aside from the fact that they can add a few inches to your height. these are the pairs that are my current favorites....come take a walk with me! |
| | these are my classmates in my special ed teacher certification course. we meet 3 times a week and be students once again. it's a very good feeling to be with people who share the same passion for teaching, especially for children with disabilities. the course has kept me real busy. the paper work is just overwhelming. it will end in 3 weeks and i am looking forward to going back to my "normal" life. |
| | anna celebrated her 11th birthday birthday with a sleepover party last friday. she had some of her good friends spend the night at our house. when pre-teen girls get together, this is what happens. at least, this is what happened at our house on friday night. |
| | we had a very foggy morning a couple of days ago. it was difficult to manuever through the road. i had to drive at 20 miles/hr. i clocked in late because of that! these pictures were taken at a little past 8 in the morning, so you can imagine how foggy it was! |
I came across this Rules for Teachers in one of our prescribed texts, The Teachers Guide To Success. I find it very interesting. Women teachers were not even allowed to get married! I'm just glad I wasn't in the profession at that time. Read on..... RULES For TEACHERS 1872 1.Teachers each day will fill lamps, clean chimneys. 2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session. 3.Make your pens carefully. You may whittle nibs to the individual taste of the pupils. 4.Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly. 5.After ten hours in school, the teachers may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books. 6.Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed. 7.Every teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden to society. 8.Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty. 9.The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves. | | an anime lover's dream come true happened here at the woodland's marriott hotel last saturday. my three kids are japanese anime afficionados and had been planning to attend this convention since march. there were a lot of people, mostly teenagers but there were some older ones too. one of the highlights of the affair is cosplay which allows participants to dress up like their favorite anime characters. kevin and his friend robert who hitched a ride with us went with the cosplay. kevin dressed as light yagami, from one of his current favorites, Bleach while robert had on a tobi costume from Naruto. anna dressed as ururu, also from bleach and my little yna first thought of going in her kimono. while i was getting her ready, she told me.."mom, can i go as a normal person?" so, yna went as normal yna. hehehe! it was a first time experience for me, to see all these kids dressed as anime characters. it sort of reminded me of haloween but on closer observation, there is a certain look and uniqueness to anime dressing. we also got to meet up with one of my multiply contacts, liza dimagan and her kids from spring, texas. see, there are real people in multiply!! i am posting some pictures. we took a ton of them because there were so many nice costumes. one thing that caught my attention, though is that a lot of parents were there, escorting their children and having fun with them. it was an eye opener for me. it made me realize that parents no matter what culture they come from, care and support their children's interests. |
It's been almost 2 years since I started multiplying. I've met different kinds of people from various parts of the world through it. It has kept me connected to my family and friends in the Philippines. It has given me a venue to chronicle my life as a wife, mother and as a teacher here in the U.S. Aside from these, I cannot deny that I have met a number of online friends who have made my multiply experience quite pleasant. I've had my share of encounters with some annoying people but I guess that comes when you're part of the world wide web. Yesterday, when we got home from attending the Anime Convention at the Woodland's Marriott Hotel, we found a USPS package waiting by our front porch. It was from one of our multiply friends. (robin's and mine) Last week, Shareena Floro-Bernstein had sent me a PM saying she had made some Spring wreaths and that she had wanted to send one to my family as an Easter present and as a token of our multiply friendship. Thank you, Shareena. And here's a picture of your lovely hand-made spring wreath hanging on our front door. And as you mentioned in our internet conversations, it is true that we share common values.......we are both family oriented and both love our cats.....hehehe! Happy Easter again. a much appreciated present... | Guestbook | |
